Humour

Australian English | Aboriginal languages | Humour

The Australian sense of humour is described as very ‘dry’, or ‘tongue-in-cheek’ (sarcastic), and can often be irreverent. Australians love to laugh and tease each other. What may seem like a volley of mild insults between 2 people is often a display of friendship---a way of bonding with someone.

It might take you a while to work out when an 'Aussie' is joking. Our humour is often subtle and you will not always be able to determine this from someone’s facial expression. However, you will realise quickly that we are generally a very good-humoured people who like to make the people around us feel good too.
