Work as a Doctor in Australia

Hospital employment conditions

Working in Australian public hospitals | Hospital employment conditions

Employment conditions for hospital non-specialists are determined by individual hospitals. Nevertheless, there is a general uniformity in terms of salary and conditions and overseas trained doctors (OTDs) are paid at the same rates as Australian trained doctors.

Some Australian hospitals may be able to assist OTDs with relocation expenses and provide temporary accommodation on your arrival. You should check with the specific hospital for more information about how they can and cannot assist you, once the hospital has determined your suitability for a position.

There is more information about the public hospital system under the Medicare section of DoctorConnect.

Medical registration and employment

Information on how to gain medical registration to practise in an Australian public hospital can be found under Assessment pathways for hospital non-specialists.

To find work in a public hospital, you should first try the State and Territory Health Departments. Contacts for these departments, as well as other sources of employment information including medical recruiters, are located under Finding a job.
