Work as a Doctor in Australia

Fellowship of a Specialist Medical College

Areas of specialty in the healthcare system | Fellowship of a Specialist Medical College | Recognition as a specialist

Fellowship of an Australian Specialist Medical College is not automatically granted when an overseas trained specialist's (OTS's) qualifications are recognised as equivalent to that of an Australian trained specialist.

OTSs may be eligible for Fellowship from an Australian Specialist Medical College if they complete the Australian Medical Council/Specialist Medical Colleges 'standard pathway' for assessment. The purpose of the standard pathway is to determine equivalence of training and qualifications of OTSs with that of Australian trained specialists, to establish their eligibility to apply to a State or Territory Medical Board for registration to practise independently/without supervision as a specialist.

However, while applicants may complete a College's requirements for specialist recognition for registration to practise independently/without supervision in Australia, the College may set further requirements for Fellowship purposes. Further information should be sought from the relevant Specialist Medical College.
