Work as a Doctor in Australia

After registration

Once you have gained registration to practise as a doctor in Australia, there are other issues to consider. This section contains brief overviews and information specific to working as a general practitioner (GP), as a hospital non-specialist and as a specialist.

Some of the more important general issues that need to be addressed are also included, such as Medicare provider numbers and medical indemnity cover.

You will also find resources to help you with the business side of being a doctor, ongoing medical training and education, and professional support.

The Department of Health and Ageing is currently developing an online training program for the Australian healthcare system. The website should be available later in 2006, so watch this space.

In addition, a number of the Specialist Medical Colleges are being funded by the Department to develop various orientation programs. The first one of these---the online orientation program of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)---is now available from their website.
