Royal Flying Doctor Service

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) is one of the most elite medical organisations in the world. The RFDS is a not-for-profit charitable service providing aeromedical emergency and primary healthcare services to people who live, work and travel in regional and remote Australia. They also provide communication and education assistance to this region.

The RFDS seeks doctors with the following general skills and experience as a minimum requirement:

  • Australian medical registration;

  • 5 years postgraduate experience;

  • Sound knowledge of resuscitation techniques;

  • Good basic grounding in obstetrics, paediatrics, general medicine, emergency and trauma, surgery and anaesthesia;

  • An interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health;

  • Excellent communication skills; A philosophy sympathetic to the ideals of the RFDS; and

  • An empathy for the bush and its people (‘the bush’ is how Australians refer to rural, more remote regions of Australia).
