Polite behaviour

Meeting people | Clothing | Polite behaviour | Holidays

Australians are quite frank in stating opinions but will generally do so in a way that avoids offence. We believe that everyone has equal rights, and strive to behave in a way consistent with that belief.

There are many things that may be acceptable in other countries, which would be considered very rude in Australia. For example, smoking without first asking permission of those people around you is considered very rude. In some cases, such as in public buildings, it may even be illegal.

If you’re not sure if something will offend, you should always ask first to avoid offence.
