National emblems

National emblems are the symbols we use to identify our selves to the rest of the world. Displaying them is a form of patriotism, of which you will see plenty in the form of Australian flag-waving at international sporting events.

Some of our most well-known symbols are listed below:

National Flag
Dark blue, Union Jack in top lefthand corner, Southern Cross on righthand side consisting of 7 stars---6 for the States and one representing the Territories. (Note: Don’t mistake it for the New Zealand flag, which is the same but with only 6 stars!)

National anthem
Advance Australia Fair

National colours
Green and gold (representing colours of landscape)

Coat of Arms
Features a kangaroo and an emu (representing a progressive nation, because these animals cannot move backward; only forward).

National flower
Golden Wattle
