Multicultural Australia

Australians accept other cultures and differences and expect others to do the same. Cultural and linguistic diversity is one of Australia’s greatest strengths.

More than 6 million migrants have made Australia home since 1945 to help build the prosperous and peaceful nation we enjoy today. Of Australia’s 20 million population:

• roughly 43% were born overseas or had at least one parent born overseas (as of 2001 Census); and
• the most common languages spoken of the 200 in common use in Australia are English, Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin.
