Meeting people

Meeting people | Clothing | Polite behaviour | Holidays

When meeting someone for the first time, take your cue from them in regard to appropriate behaviour. Australians generally shake hands when meeting someone and do not kiss or hug strangers.

Australians are not comfortable asking, or being asked personal questions, such as age, marital status or financial position, unless you are a family member or very close friend.

For more information about meeting people, visit the website of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
