The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is a government department with responsibility for:

  • entry, stay and departure arrangements for non-citizens;

  • border immigration control;

  • arrangements for the settlement of migrants and humanitarian entrants, other than migrant child education;

  • citizenship;

  • ethnic affairs;

  • multicultural affairs.

The Migration and Temporary Entry Division is responsible for planning and administering Australia’s annual migrant intake. Particular emphasis is placed on attracting highly qualified and experienced skilled and business people as migrants.

The Division also provides and coordinates policy advice on Australia’s temporary residence program, which enables overseas people to come to Australia for specific purposes that result in some benefit to Australia.
