Climate

Climate | Flora and fauna

Two-thirds of Australia’s interior is desert, but the diversity even here is quite extraordinary and ruggedly beautiful. Hot weather and lots of desert is probably one of the most popular perceptions of Australia. In reality, we have a wide range of climates, from the tropics in northern Australia, a variety of warm temperate and sub-tropical climates, through to a cool temperate climate in Tasmania.

Australian seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere, so Christmas occurs in summer (December to February), which also coincides with the end of the school year in December.

February is generally the hottest month, except in the tropics where seasons are described as being the Wet or Dry season, temperatures are consistently in the low 30s all year round and humidity is high (Australia measures temperature on the Celsius scale).
