Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

National organisations | New South Wales (NSW) | Australian Capital Territory (ACT) | South Australia (SA) | Queensland (QLD) | Western Australia (WA) | Tasmania (TAS) | Victoria (VIC) | Northern Territory (NT)

The Australian Capital Territory is wholly contained within the state of New South Wales. The city of Canberra, Australia's national capital, is located here with a population of around 320,000. Two-thirds of the 2330 square kilometres making up the Territory is national park.

Australians use the words 'Canberra' and 'the ACT' interchangeably. (The ACT is not pronounced like the word 'act', it is pronounced as though you are spelling it, that is, the A....C....T.)

The Visit Canberra website contains detailed information on the region, including attractions, climate, transport, accommodation, maps and events. Below is some more information on services available in the ACT region. Check the listings in National organisations and under Information for families for additional information.

Local government services

The ACT Territory Government website provides a starting point for information on things like health, housing, education and transport.

A map of local council boundaries in NSW is available from the NSW Department of Local Government website. From the same site, you can view the local government directory for the websites and contact information of these councils. There is also a local council search facility to search for a particular town or suburb to find out which council’s jurisdiction the location falls within.
