Employers who have been unable to find an Australian trained doctor to fill a position can consider employing an overseas trained doctor (OTD). Make sure you read the all the information linked to each listed item carefully.
Please take time to also read the Important advice—it could save you a lot of time and effort!
Note: The information on this site is as accurate as possible, however changes in process or policy may not immediately be reflected. It is your responsibility to check with the relevant organisations for the most up-to-date information before making any decisions.
The time required to complete each of these components will vary according to your situation. Some tasks may be undertaken simultaneously to speed up the process. Most of these can be commenced or completed before an OTD arrives in Australia.
- Before attempting to recruit an OTD, you must apply for the position to be recognised as an unmet Area of Need (AON) position.
- If the position requires the doctor to provide services that will attract Medicare benefits, you must apply for it to be recognised as a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS) position.
- An employer must be completely satisfied that the applicant is qualified for the position, understands and is willing and able to undertake all aspects of the work required, and able to obtain medical registration in Australia.
- If employing an OTD on a temporary visa, you must apply to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to become a sponsor and sign a sponsorship undertaking.
- There must be an employment contract or letter of appointment for the position. Employment and remuneration must be in accordance with Australian industrial laws.
- Ensure that the doctor has appropriate medical indemnity cover in Australia for the duration of his or her appointment.
- A suitable induction and orientation program should be provided to the OTD.
If you would like to review the registration requirements for OTDs, they are summarised in the Checklist for OTDs.
