Bridging courses

Bridging courses | Postgraduate training | Australian General Practice Training Program | English language training

Bridging courses, in this context, are short courses that aim to assist overseas trained doctors (OTDs) who are currently in Australia to complete the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations.

Generally, courses run for about 10 to 26 weeks. There are 2 types of bridging courses: one that prepares candidates to sit for the AMC Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination, and the other aimed at candidates for the AMC clinical examination.

Rural Workforce Agencies and Postgraduate Medical Councils may be able to offer advice regarding AMC bridging courses.

Some organisations offer specific AMC bridging programs. These organisations include:
GP Education Australia
Centre for International Medical Graduates
Postgraduate Medical Council of South Australia
Postgraduate Medical Institute of Tasmania

In addition, there is a loan scheme for participants of the AMC bridging course program---FEE-HELP. Available to eligible permanent resident doctors, it covers the fees for bridging courses. For more information, visit the website of the Department of Education, Science and Training.
