Employ an overseas trained doctor

Supporting your doctors

As an employer, you are expected to help your newly arrived, overseas trained doctor (OTD) to settle into their position and the community. Cultural and social differences can be very alienating for an OTD and every effort should be made to ease their transition into to the Australian setting. After all, if he or she feels welcome, they are much more likely to stay!

In addition, many doctors working in rural or remote communities are confronted by limited access to professional training, services and support. It is important that an employer makes every effort to address these issues in order to increase their chances of attracting doctors---and then keeping them.

Reconciling the professional, cultural and personal expectations of employer, doctor and community will also greatly improve the outlook of all concerned.

Supporting your doctors is about how to improve a doctor's transition to a new practice setting, a new community and a new culture. You will find suggestions and resources that can help you to make a positive and continuing impact on the professional and social lives of your OTDs. There may even be funding (for eligible positions/communities) to help you do it!
