Employ an overseas trained doctor

Orientation programmes

The time taken to introduce your overseas trained doctor (OTD) to your healthcare setting is important. This vital step, particularly in smaller and less resourced practice settings, is often omitted or done 'on-the-fly'. While this is understandable, the benefit to OTD, employer and community is greatly increased by making this a priority.

There are different types of orientation programme relevant to OTDs. This section deals with Workplace (including clinical) and Australian healthcare system orientations. Information on Cultural awareness orientation is dealt with separately.

The level of information needed for each of these programmes largely depends on the size and type of practice. Large public hospitals clearly have different requirements to those of a small rural practice. However, the same basic issues need to be addressed.

Contact your local Division of General Practice or Rural Workforce Agency to find out how they can help you with the orientation process and, if your OTD/position is eligible, whether funding is available to you.
